About 855, 900 forklifts are used around the country at this time, according to a report by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA). In Walnut Creek, CA, and across the nation, forklifts are used to move stacks of materials around warehouses, plants and businesses. There is plenty of opportunity for accidents to happen; the ITA estimates that roughly 90% of these forklifts will be in an accident sometime during their useful life span of around 8 years. Fatal accidents involving forklifts also happen to about 85 persons a year, says the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). An additional 34, 900 persons suffer severe injuries in forklift accidents every year. Tipping over is the major reason for 42% of forklift accidents that result in a construction accident personal injury lawsuit. Unbalanced loading and inexperience driving and operating the forklifts contributes to the accident rates. Under Federal law, operators of a forklift must be over the age of 18 years, and they must have been trained and certified prior to operating the machines. These machines are handy for moving heavy objects around a construction site, warehouse, plant, store and for loading or unloading transportation vehicles. They can maneuver well in tight spots, turn corners and travel quickly around a workplace. When workers are not careful to adhere to recommendations for weight and load limits, or if they are horsing around on the job, accidents happen. Overloading weight limits causes most forklift accidents Hitting other employees or passersby Loads that fall off the forklift cause harm Using a forklift to elevate people instead of cargo Accidentally driving a forklift off a loading dock Poor maintenance that results in brake, steering, transmission or hydraulic system failures Missing safety devices Poor workplace design or visibility and obstructions Operator error or loss of control Improper use, horseplay Workplace Hazards Cause Forklift Accidents Many factors contribute to forklift accident rates. The layout of a warehouse can be difficult for forklift operators to maneuver around if aisles and turns are too narrow or restricted. Lack of visibility can cause collisions between forklifts, obstructions, structures, other vehicles or pedestrians. If an operator is not paying attention or otherwise makes an operational error, an accident can happen quickly. Lack of training and understanding of potential hazards can lead to accidents in the workplace. In a construction zone, there can be many obstacles that a forklift driver must pay attention to. Any slight miscalculation or error in judgment can create a hazardous situation. Safety Issues and Forklifts Not following recommended safety rules, maintenance and regulations at the workplace contributes to forklift accidents and injuries. Lack of service and maintenance of the vehicle Poor communication when multiple forklifts are in use or too close together in a shared space Giving others rides on the forklift or its load Improper moves when backing up or turning the equipment and load Failure to warn others about having a forklift in use in the area Improper parking Failure to properly block the wheels when forklift is on a semi-trailer or railway car Poor driving skills or horseplay, stunt driving Safety Training for Forklift Operators In addition to Federal law that makes it illegal to operate a forklift if a person is under age 18, any company using forklifts should be sure that operators are adequately trained to operate the forklift and that they are taught safe operation of the machinery. One reason driving a forklift is more difficult and different than driving other vehicles it that forklifts feature rear wheel steering. A safety check should be done by the operator prior to using the forklift to make sure there are no defects and that all systems and controls work properly, such as the horn, lights and to ensure that tires are properly inflated. Additional tips for safe operation of forklifts have been published online by Forklift Safety.org, and by OSHA. Injury accidents and fatalities that happen from use of forklift trucks cause bodily harm and financial strain to families. If you or a loved one was injured in a forklift accident, get legal representation from our personal injury lawyers. Our Walnut Creek, CA, experienced attorneys know local courts and the laws pertaining to workplace injuries. Understanding the hazards presented by forklift operation may be very helpful to you in pursuing your case.

You spend most of your time around large objects with Caterpillar logos on them, and you absolutely love every minute. Because of this, it is probably time to get yourself some Caterpillar decals for your personal vehicles and other belongings as well. Normally, on Caterpillar dozers, you see the company's name with the official color and logo. However, the decals that you can buy for your personal items are usually a little more stylized. You can still find company colors and logos, but they may be superimposed over other designs, such as replicas of chrome diamond plate steel with a clear background, so you can make it look as though the pattern is stamped on the side of your vehicle. Your Caterpillar hats look great on your head, but they cannot display the Caterpillar name on the entire side of your truck, which is the best way to let everyone know how you feel about those big yellow bulldozers and cranes. Within the vast inventory on eBay, you can find Caterpillar decals in all sorts of sizes and designs. Put them wherever you want, and make an impression as big as your favorite heavy equipment.

If you live in a snow belt, it’s likely you will have considered fitting your vehicle with a snow plow. Or perhaps you own and operate a snow plowing business. Snowplowing is something that can save hours of shoveling when the weather gets bad, and with this in mind, we have gathered together a handful of the best snow plowing techniques around. Read the Manual Read both your vehicle manual as well as the manual of the snow plow you’ve purchased for your fleet. Follow all the safety instructions for installation and safe operation, as this will protect you and the environment in which you’re using the plow. It’ll also ensure the safety, and longevity of your machinery. Buy Snow Tires Buy either all season tires or snow tires for your vehicle, as one of your biggest considerations should be getting the best grip possible on the road surface of the parking lot driveway, or road you’re plowing. Consider the fact that the area you’re plowing will probably be very icy or slushy, and for this reason, the right tires are very important. Know the Best Time to Plow Rather than waiting for the snow to lie and to ice up or turn into slippery, soggy mush, it’s good practice to get out there and begin plowing immediately after a snowfall. If there is a heavy continuous snow fall, it’s crucial to keep on top of clearing the snow by clearing it a few times throughout the day or evening, so it doesn’t get too deep or compact. Know What to Do with Snow Piled Close to Walls When you’re removing snow that’s either piled up against walls, or the edges of a building, drive toward the wall with your blade raised. Then, lower the blade, reverse, pull the snow way back as much as 25 feet if space allows, stop, and again, raise your blade. This will result in a manageable pile of snow that you can move out of the way when you’re done with the plow. Know What to Do if Your Driveway is Curved Consider staking and outlining your plow zones. This is especially important if you have any ornamental or landscaped areas near where you’re removing the snow. Use GPS Fleet Tracking for Snow Plowing Knowing where your fleet has plowed and knowing where they have yet to plow is an invaluable resource that you can have thanks to GPS tracking. It’s also helpful to look back at the history and snow plow routes to see if more efficiencies can be gained. By using GPS tracking for snow plowing, it can help you to identify overlapping, redundant, or missed snow removal routes. Whether you choose a rear mounted or front mounted snow plow or have 5 snow plow trucks in your fleet or 50, these tips should get you off to a safe and efficient start.

The technique widely known as land surveying has been in use for centuries and is known as the second oldest profession humanity has ever conceived. Because humans always had the need to know exactly where they were located and accurately determine their position in the planet, surveying was created back in ancient Egypt with the use of rope extensions and the applications of uncompounded geometry. Since those times, many things have evolved making tools and other accessories easier to use and to find accurate data, specially in the always important field of land surveying. By the 1990s, simple and almost remote tools were still used in land surveying, like tape measurements, rulers and theodolites. Uncomplicated items that helped scientists to find their three-dimensional position in the planet. But the need for more sophisticated and less time consuming tools pushed scientists and researchers around the globe to find better ways to locate themselves. The first top of the line tools used in land surveying would contain prisms, also known as reflectors, so they could find the measurements of the lights that would return and make it possible for one to know the distancing of a determined spot. Nowadays the distancing measurements tools are fully robotic, and the locations are completely satellite automated. The GPS (Global Positioning System) is a more secure and fast way to measure a vast piece of land without having to waste so much time to determine the area you're trying to ascertain. The GPS tool works as a type of triangulation which does not involve any angles but is actually a trilateration, which only means that it's a method to find the positioning of some objects using simple geometry. This entire task is orchestrated by satellites. The GPS receiver will find the coordinates and measurements of the distance desired using the radio signals' traveling time. To get to a traveling time accurately, the system will use the time the signal took to reach the receiver times the speed of light and by doing so it will have the exact distance to the satellite.

Electric Power > Overhead Line Work > Use of Aerial Lifts Overhead Line Work Use of Aerial Lifts 1910.67(c) and 1910.269(p) contain specific requirements for aerial lift equipment commonly used in overhead line work. Among these requirements are: Equipment can only be operated by trained workers and within equipment rating and design limitations. Personnel working in an aerial lift must wear fall protection and cannot belt off to a pole or other structure. The lift controls of bucket, derrick, and pole setting trucks, etc. must be tested before use each day to be sure they are in safe working condition. See: 1910.67(c) on vehicle-mounted elevating and rotating work platforms 1910.269(p) on Mechanical Equipment Critical safety components that affect raising, lowering, or rotating of lifts must be visually inspected before use on each shift for indications of any possible defects. When other workers are present, vehicles must not be backed up unless (1) the driver has a clear rear view and the vehicle has a back-up alarm or (2) another Worker serves as a guide. If a vehicle has outriggers, they must be used unless the work area or terrain prevents their use. Vehicles may only be used within their maximum load limits and without outriggers if the manufacturer's design and instructions indicate that it is safe to operate without the outriggers. Before outriggers are set, the operator must have a clear view of the outriggers or otherwise ascertain that all workers are clear of outrigger motion. When a load is suspended from a boom, operators must remain at the controls unless it can be shown that there is no hazard to personnel, such as those created by a falling load, wind, or unstable soil. When operating near energized lines or equipment, aerial lift equipment must maintain the minimum approach distance unless the insulated portion of the aerial lift is operated by a 269-qualified employee. If necessary, another worker must be a spotter for the operator to ensure the minimum approach distance is maintained. If the aerial lift could contact energized lines, then at least one of the following must be done (see 1910.269(p)(4)): The energized lines exposed to contact must be covered with insulating protective material that will withstand the type of contact that might be made during the operation; or The aerial lift must be insulated, and uninsulated portions of the lifts must maintain the minimum approach distance from live parts. The aerial lift must also be positioned so that uninsulated portions of the lift cannot come within the minimum approach distance from the live parts. (Note that insulated booms require electrical testing at voltages and intervals specified in ANSI A92.2. An untested boom or one that fails a test is considered non-insulating. See 1910.67(c)(3)); or Workers must be protected by implementing all of the following: Each piece of equipment (trucks, trailers, etc.) must be grounded. All pieces of equipment must be bonded together. Ground mats must be used around equipment to extend the equipotential zone.
